Percy Jackson Timeline: All Percy Jackson Books in Order (2024)

Once upon a time, there was Percy Jackson the demigod son of Poseidon who reintroduced audiences around the world to ancient Greek and Roman mythology.

But soon he was joined by other heroes in a shared universe of other demigods in separate yet connected series. This is the Percy Jackson reading order and timeline. Enjoy!

Also, be sure to check out all of our other Mythology Book Lists like this one.

What’s on this Percy Jackson Reading Order?

The list consists of all Percy Jackson books in order, which consists of several series, all set within the same universe (sometimes called the Camp Half-blood Universe).

These include:

  • The Olympians series
  • The Kane Chronicles
  • The Heroes of Olympus series
  • The Magnum Chase books
  • The Trials of Apollo series.

This timeline also includes film/television adaptations, as well as a few comic books that were produced.

Many of the books revolve around the character of Percy Jackson who is a modern demigod of Greco-Roman mythology, but some of the books delve into other areas of mythology, and not Percy Jackson.

Don’t forget to let me know if I missed something, or a piece of media is misplaced on the timeline. Thank you, and enjoy.

The Choice of Hercules

This is a short story that takes place in Greek Mythology (and is part of my shared universe of mythic stories).

It’s a faithful adaptation of a little-known myth that is perhaps my favorite about Hercules. Check it out!

The Complete Timeline

Here is a table with everything listed in chronological order, though you can also sort by title, medium, or release date.

Additionally, you can filter this timeline by media type, so if you want to see just the books and nothing else, you could do that! I’ve tried to make this timeline truly interactive.

What is the Percy Jackson Franchise?

Percy Jackson, and all of the books that have come since it, our books written by Rick Riordan. They involve a young protagonist named Percy Jackson, who discovers that he is a demigod, the son of the Greek God Poseidon out of Greek Mythology.

Indeed, most of the Percy Jackson books deal with Greek Mythology, and are remarkably educational for young people. They involve Percy Jackson teaming up with his friends, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwoord, as they encounter various mythological threats.

But Rick Riordan did not stop with Percy Jackson. He wrote several other series based on Egyptian and Norse Mythology: The Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase books respectively. These are also great reads and take place in the same universe.

The collective universe usually goes by the title “Camp Half-blood Chronicles” though most people still know it for Percy Jackson, which is why we still call this the “Percy Jackson Timeline”.

The Proper Reading Order of the Percy Jackson Books

There are really three different ways to read the Percy Jackson books:

  1. By series
  2. In chronological order
  3. By release date

Let me briefly list out everything in order for all three.

All Camp Half-blood Universe Series in Order

Honestly, this is the easiest way to think of the different Percy Jackson-related series, and the one I most recommend you read.

Percy Jackson Books in Chronological Order

Chronological order is my favorite way to experience a franchise. However, unlike a straight-forward franchise like Harry Potter, going chronologically can get a bit convoluted, especially when you factor in all the short stories.

So this might be something to wait until you’ve already read them once by series or release order. Nevertheless, here is the chronological order:

  1. The Diary of Luke Castellan (Short Story)
  2. The Lightning Thief
  3. The Sea of Monsters
  4. The Titan’s Curse
  5. The Battle of the Labyrinth
  6. The Demigod Files (Anthology)
  7. The Last Olympian
  8. Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods (Anthology)
  9. Percy Jackson’s Greek Heroes (Anthology)
  10. The Red Pyramid
  11. The Throne of Fire
  12. The Serpent’s Shadow
  13. The Son of Sobek (Short Story)
  14. Percy Jackson and the Staff of Hermes (Short Story)
  15. Son of Magic (Short Story)
  16. The Lost Hero
  17. Leo Valdez and the Quest for Buford (Short Story)
  18. The Son of Neptune
  19. The Mark of Athena
  20. The Staff of Serapis (Short Story)
  21. The House of Hades
  22. The Crown of Ptolemy (Short Story)
  23. The Blood of Olympus
  24. The Sword of Summer
  25. The Hammer of Thor
  26. The Ship of the Dead
  27. Hotel Valhalla: Guide to the Norse Worlds
  28. 9 From the Nine Worlds
  29. The Hidden Oracle
  30. The Dark of Prophecy
  31. The Burning Maze
  32. The Tyrant’s Tomb
  33. The Tower of Nero
  34. Camp Jupiter Classified

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I start reading Percy Jackson?

The best place to start is with the first Percy Jackson book, The Lightning Thief, since that’s where it all started. However, the Kane Chronicles and the other series in this universe are all meant to stand on their own, so they’re also acceptable, though we still recommend The Lightning Thief first.

While we have included the films and comics in this timeline, those are extra content and not necessary for most. If all you do is read the books, you’ll be good to go.

Why aren’t Rick Riordan Presents books included?

Rick Riordan Presents is an imprint that specializes in middle-grade mythology-based books. However, these do not take place in the same continuity as Percy Jackson, so we do not include them in the timeline.

That said, they are excellent, and you should definitely check them out. We have this list here for you to peruse.

What year does the Percy Jackson series take place?

The Percy Jackson series takes place in roughly 2009, though the year is never actually specified. The first Olympians series takes place over the course of one year, between winter and August.

How long after The Last Olympian does The Lost Hero take place?

The Lost Hero takes place roughly six months after the events of The Last Olympian. It is a sequel series and stands on its own, though we do recommend you read the Olympians series first before starting the Heroes of Olympus series.

Are the Kane Chronicles in the same universe as Percy Jackson?

Yes! The King Chonicles are in the same universe with Percy Jackson (and with the Magnus Chase books). Although they mostly stand on their own, the two series cross over in a number of short stories.

Is Magnus Chase connected to Percy Jackson?

Yes! The Magnus Chase books are in the same universe with Percy Jackson (and with the Kane Chronicles). Although both series stand on their own, they do have a number of crossovers in a few short stories, along with some crossovers with the Kane Chronicles as well.
